Jerome Tang could maximize Caleb Love’s talent at Kansas State

The Kansas State Wildcats entered the 2022-23 season with little to no expectations under head coach Jerome Tang, especially in the ultra-loaded Big 12. So all they did was go on to finish third in the conference, earn a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and end up with Texas as the last Big 12 teams remaining in March Madness. Talk about shattering expectations.

But now comes the part where Tang can really make his mark in Manhattan and in college basketball: the encore. After five seasons — three with Little Rock and two with K-State — star guard Markquis Nowell is all but gone, leaving a hole much bigger than the 5-foot-7 shadow he gives off. The future of Keyontae Johnson is also up in the air (depending on if he wants to apply for a medical redshirt).

Tang will have to be aggressive in trying to keep K-State in the mix of the Big 12 and the national landscape and Caleb Love would be a massive help with that plight. Not only is Love a Missouri native, meaning that a transfer to the Wildcats would take him closer to home, but the guard could be exactly what the team will need in the backcourt with a scorer, playmaker and leader with Nowell gone.

More importantly, though, the biggest takeaway from Tang and Kansas State’s run this past season was the head coach’s ability to get the most from his players. Love has lacked that at North Carolina and, if he can realize that, he could also reach his full potential if he were to suit up for this program.
