Nick Allegretti provides stability and depth for the Chiefs O-line
There is quite literally nothing to jump in the air and celebrate about when it comes to Nick Allegretti coming back to the Chiefs. He’s a fine player, nothing more, nothing less. Allegretti is also not a player who, frankly, saw the field all that much for Kansas City in previous years.
At the same time, though, with Orlando Brown Jr. and Andrew Wylie leaving at tackles, maintaining as much continuity as possible on the offensive line was something this team needed. Bringing back a veteran who has been good in a backup role for them was a smart and cheap way to do so.
Stealing Drue Tranquill from the Chargers is great, but did the Chiefs need it?
Understanding that Drue Tranquill is coming in on a quite cheap one-year, $3 million deal, it’s a worthwhile look given what the linebacker did with the Chargers last year. Sure, it’s sweet to steal him from an AFC West rival too, but he had his best season to date in 2022 as LA gave him an increased role on defense.
But the big question is why the Chiefs felt it was necessary to bring him at all. Even in his proverbial breakout 2022 campaign, what Tranquill did well was wholly redundant of what Kansas City’s two primary linebackers, Willie Gay Jr. and Nick Bolton, do well too in coverage and pass-rush blitzing. With Tranquill being middling against the run, I’m not sure what the net returns here really are and, most importantly, if they’re all that substantial.
Mike Edwards has big Chiefs shoes to fill replacing Juan Thornhill
For one reason or another, it became apparent that Juan Thornhill was gone, which proved true when the safety signed in Cleveland. But there’s no denying that the Virginia product was a playmaker on the back-end in Kansas City. There is hope that Bryan Cook can eventually replace him, but Mike Edwards was brought in to help with the transition.
Frankly, this deal is just lukewarm for me all around. Edwards has been a fine if not unspectacular player for the Bucs in his career and it seems unlikely he’ll be as productive as Thornhill was. At the same time, though, with him largely serving as part of a transition to Cook, there aren’t many strong negative feelings toward making a move such as this.
