Braves iconic big hat celebration is no longer allowed

This is honestly a travesty. The Atlanta Braves have been informed by MLB that they can no longer wear the iconic “big hat” they’ve donned on players’ heads after hitting a home run. Of all the unique home run celebrations teams have rolled out the last few years, this was one of the funniest and encapsulated Atlanta in a really iconic way.

Well, that era will go down as short-lived.

The reason the league put the kibosh on the hat is because New Era, the league’s on-field ball cap provider and official hat sponsor, took issue with it. The hat was produced by another company, More Than Sports.

The company posted a Tweet announcing the news and memorializing the hat’s time.

This would make a lot more sense if New Era had an equivalent to the big hat in their product offering. New Era specializes specifically in hats that are human-head-sized. How boring!

Maybe it’s an indicator that New Era sees a new market to break into, and is after the big hat market. More Than Sports isn’t the only player in the space, a company called Noggin Boss was on the popular entrepreneurial pitch show Shark Tank to pitch an almost identical product.
