Reds: Lucas Giolito and 3 more pitchers Cincinnati should target
The Cincinnati Reds have been rumored to have been in talks with the White Sox for starting pitching. They should target Lucas Giolito, among others.
It’s going to be an exciting couple of weeks for the Cincinnati Reds and their fans. The trade deadline and the weeks leading up to it tend to be pretty exciting for everybody, with the buyers at the deadline having the most fun.
For the past few seasons, the Reds have been sellers, causing their fans to be miserable, watching their favorite players be shipped away. But the tables have turned this season, as the Reds are actively in the market for pitching, specifically starting pitching ahead of the deadline. There are already reports coming out that the Reds have inquired about a few of the White Sox pitchers, including Lucas Giolito.
Reds rumors: Lucas Giolito is the perfect trade target for Cincinnati, with one catch
The most likely name to be dealt from the White Sox, according to Fansided’s MLB Insider Robert Murray, is the starting pitcher Lucas Giolito. This report makes a ton of sense for the White Sox, as Giolito finds himself on an expiring contract and the White Sox 2023 season has been a disaster to put it lightly. And every contending team could use a starting pitcher of Giolito’s ability, especially David Bell’s Cincinnati Reds squad.
There has actually been a hypothetical trade discussed among the media, surrounding Giolito to Cincinnati for a prospect haul highlighted by Chase Petty. This hypothetical shows a fairly even trade, but it also exposes the biggest catch for any Reds trade that could contain any of their top prospects. If the Reds are to ship away a top prospect like Petty, they need to be in aggreeance to secure an extension with the pitcher being acquired.
With that being said, a Lucas Giolito trade would be a dream come true for the Cincinnati Reds if they can lock him down for a few years into the future. This catch isn’t the case for all potential trades, as rental players have their place in the game, but for the higher-level players that require top prospects in a return, the Reds will need to play it safe.
