Reds rumors: Acquiring veteran David Robertson could help lock down games in Cincinnati

So far in 2023, there has been zero reported connection for the Reds acquiring David Robertson from the Mets, but this kind of deal just makes a ton of sense for both sides. For New York, 2023 hasn’t been their year. They are nearly 20 games back in the NL East and looking to sell some of their expiring contracts to receive some compensation for them. One of those names is their current closer David Robertson who is having a tremendous season, pitching to a WHIP around 1 and an ERA around 2.

For Cincinnati, they are in the market for a relief pitcher or two to bolster the back end of their bullpen. Robertson would provide David Bell with a perfect setup man, which was supposed to be Robertson’s role in New York until closer Edwin Diaz went down. Bell’s squad is also in the market for a lefty reliever, but they haven’t been able to secure that upgrade yet either. Acquiring this former All-Star would allow the Reds to finish games with Lucas Sims, Robertson, and Alexis Diaz. That is more than ideal for Cincinnati to make a playoff push this year, especially with Tejay Antone on his way back to the active roster.
