The Texas Rangers were one of the most disappointing in baseball this season after an expensive offseason signing Corey Seager, Marcus Siemen and Jon Gray resulting in the dismal of their manager Chris Woodward.
However, the team enters Wednesday's matchup against the lowly Oakland Athletics, can it take care of business? The team will send out lefty Cole Ragans, who is making his third big league start.
Here are the odds for Wednesday's meeting from consensus sportsbooks:
Athletics vs. Rangers Odds, Run Line, Total
- Athletics: +1.5 (-145)
- Rangers: -1.5 (+125)
- Athletics: +140
- Rangers: -160
- 9 (Over +100/Under -120)
Athletics vs. Rangers Prediction and Pick
There are a ton of questions on both sides as neither starting pitcher has a ton of experience. I mentioned that Ragans only has two MLB starts under his belt, but the lefty is set to face an Oakland lineup that is dreadful against southpaws. The A's are hitting .221 against left handed pitching, 28th in all of baseball.
On the other side, Adam Oller draws the start for the A's, who has made nine starts this season. While his ERA is a ghastly 7.26, digging a bit deeper it may be inflated due to competition. He has pitched better over his last five starts, while still not good it is an improvement at 5.68, against the Houston Astros three times, the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants.
Could Oller be in for a better start against a Rangers team, who is just about league average in wRC+ since the beginning of August? I think so.
I see some value in taking Oakland with some positive regression coming for the A's starter, but their hitting metrics give me pause. With that being said, I'm on the under in what can be a bit of a rock fight.
LEAN: UNDER 9 (-120)
