Brandon Staley Will Have Most Success in 2021 of Rookie Coaches in 2021
Every season the NFL welcomes a new batch of head coaches. Some are coordinators, some are position coaches and some have been head coaches before. That is not the case this season.
None of the new coaching hires have been head coaches in the NFL before. They’re all literally rookie head coaches. Normally, a new coach is hired because something in that situation isn’t going well. With the seven new coaches, that trend is fairly true. However, one coach is perfectly set up to have success in his first year.
Brandon Staley, the new head coach for the Los Angeles Chargers will have the most success off the bat. The reason I’m saying this is for one reason. The Chargers have Justin Herbert. While Urban Meyer has Trevor Lawrence and David Culley has (maybe) Deshaun Watson, Herbert showed during his rookie year that he can play with the best of them.
Staley has a defensive background, coordinating one of the top defenses in the league last season for the crosstown Los Angeles Rams. If Staley can raise the defense for the Chargers, Los Angeles can and will make serious noise in the AFC.
Offensively, Herbert is projected to take a step forward. WIth weapons like Keenan Allen and Austin Ekeler, Los Angeles is set up to be potent on that side of the ball.
WynnBET has the Chargers projected to finish second in the AFC West with +450 odds. While it doesn’t help Staley that he has to face the Kansas City Chiefs twice a year, it provides a good barometer for where the team is at.
Staley is currently the favorite to win Coach of the Year, with his odds being set at +1300. Right behind him are Brian Flores, Ron Rivera and Kyle Shanahan (all three are at +1400).
Staley has the best overall situation, making him the most promising rookie coach.
