39 of Last 40 Major Winners Were Ranked Inside OWGR Top 50

The only exception to this rule, is last year when Phil Mickelson managed to win at 250/1.

Big name golfers who rank outside the top 40 golfers in the world heading into this week includes; Tommy Fleetwood, Russell Henley, Webb Simpson, Tiger Woods, Justin Rose, Matthew Wolff, and Bubba Watson.

The Last 12 PGA Champions Made the Cut in Their Final Start Before the Tournament

So, we don't want to bet on golfers who missed the cut their last time out? That actually crosses off a few big names this week:

  • Brooks Koepka - (MC at Masters)
  • Will Zalatoris - (MC at AT&T Byron Nelson)
  • Sam Burns - (MC at AT&T Byron Nelson)

10 of Last 12 PGA Champions Made the Cut in the Previous Major Prior to Winning

So, if we follow this third trend, there's a few more big-name golfers we can exclude from the list. Brooks Koepka would make this list as well as the above one, due to his last start being at the Masters. Here are other golfers who missed the cut at the Masters last month:

  • Jordan Spieth - (MC at Masters)
  • Xander Schauffele - (MC at Masters)
  • Abraham Ancer - (MC at Masters)

9 of the Last 12 PGA Champions Were Younger Than 30 Years Old

Don't let Phil Mickelson's win last year distract you from the fact that the PGA Championship has historically been a young mans event. Before Mickelson, the last golfer to win the PGA Championship that was over 30 years old, was Jimmy Walker in 2016 when he won it at 36.

With most of the top golfers in the world being in their 20s nowadays, this unfortunately doens't help us narrow down our choices that much. The top ranked golfer that's at least 30 years old, is Patrick Cantlay, who just turned 30 two months ago.

9 of the Last 12 PGA Champions Had At Least One Top 10 in Five Events Prior

Recent form is obviously a big-time indicator of success, especially at major tournaments. Before you lock in your bet, you should absolutely take a quick look to see how they've done in recent starts.

If they don't have a top 10 finish in their last five starts, consider looking somewhere else.
