Oddsmakers Think Jonathan India has Locked Up NL Rookie of the Year
With only a month left in the season, the picture for who will win each player award is starting to become more clear. That’s especially the case when it comes to the National League Rookie of the Year.
WynnBET now has Jonathan India of the Cincinnati Reds set as the overwhelming -1200 favorite to win the award, which is an implied probability of 92.31%.
Trevor Rogers was the betting favorite for the major of the season, but India’s odds have skyrocketed since surpassing him in late July. Rogers is still second on the odds list, and the only other player with a legitimate shot of winning the award, at +600 odds.
Most of India’s offensive numbers may not blow you away (17 home runs, .272 batting average), but it’s his ability to get on base that has been world class this season. With an on-base percentage of .383, India finds himself ranked eighth in all of Major League Baseball in that stat.
He has played an integral role in the Reds' second half surge, which has resulted in them recently overtaking the San Diego Padres for the second wild card west in the National League. At 71-60, they currently hold a two-game lead over the Padres, but are still 7.5-games back from the Milwaukee Brewers for the top spot in the NL Central.
India has also been fantastic defensively for the Reds, He ranks first in the National League in putouts as a second baseman with 227, first in double plays turned as a second baseman with 64, and he also has committed the fewest errors as a second baseman with only 12.
Cincinnati got a good one with the fifth overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. Barring any kind of major injury or Trevor Rogers pitching six consecutive shutout starts, Jonathan India will be your 2021 NL Rookie of the Year.
