Padres vs. Pirates Prediction and Odds for Sunday, May 1st (San Diego to Cap off this Series with a Win)
By Matt De Saro
The San Diego Padres hope to keep the party going on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. The Padres took Game 1 of this series 7-3, continuing their trend of beating bad teams in 2022. While this seems like an easy thing to do, losing to bad teams is a common occurrence in the MLB. But, the Padres took three of four from the Diamondbacks and swept the Reds twice already this season. The Padres are having less luck with teams that have a winning record, but the Pirates are not one of those teams.
Pittsburgh enters this matchup on a losing slide. They were swept by the Brewers in their mid-week series and the Padres could easily hand them two more losses this weekend.

Padres vs. Pirates Prediction and Pick
Right off the bat, Joe Musgrove gives the Padres a fantastic chance to win against any team. He is 3-0 with a 2.16 ERA and 0.88 WHIP. He is one of the reasons why the Padres are leading the NL West and should have an easy time with a weak Pirates lineup. In his last two starts, Musgrove gave up four runs in 12 ⅓ innings while striking out 11. He hasn’t been lights out, but the Padres bats have given him plenty of support. Musgrove also has a phenomenal strikeout to walk a number of 25:2.
Mitch Keller, on the other hand, does not give the Pirates a fantastic chance to win against anyone. Keller enters today’s game with a 6.62 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in 17 ⅔ innings. His last time out, Keller gave up four earned runs in 4 ⅔ innings against the Brewers. His strikeout to walk rate of 16:7 needs some work as well.
The Pirates' offense will not be much help as they rank 24th in runs and 27th in home runs. I think this is a great spot for Musgrove to continue his strong season while Keller continues to struggle.
Pick: Padres -1.5
