I sit here on July 3, 2022, and the starting pitcher with the best ERA in Major League Baseball isn't even in the top three on the odds list to win his league's Cy Young award.

Am I missing something, or is Tony Gonsolin getting completely disrespected by oddsmakers?

Here are the top five National League pitchers on the odds list at WynnBET Sportsbook to win this year's NL Cy Young.

Odds to Win the National League Cy Young

  • Sandy Alcantara +160
  • Corbin Burnes +350
  • Joe Musgrove +450
  • Max Fried +1000
  • Tony Gonsolin +1000

Listen, if you want to make Sandy Alcantara the betting favorite, then fine, you won't get too much of a debate from me. He's the lone bright spot on an otherwise lackluster (to put it nicely) Marlins team, and his 1.95 ERA is pretty impressive.

But, if you don't even have Tony Gonsolin in the top three, then I have a problem with you. What else does this guy need to do to get some respect?

He leads the Majors in ERA at 1.54, and is first in the NL in WHIP at 0.820. Not only that, but he has a 10-0 record in 15 starts for the Dodgers this season. Yet, he's still 10/1 to be named the Cy Young winner?!

While he's not exactly a household name, these numbers aren't completely out of nowhere. He had a 2.93 ERA in 11 games in 2019, a 2.31 in nine games in 2019, and a 3.23 ERA in 15 games last year. Those numbers over a three year sample size gives me confidence he can remain amongst the top arms in the Majors this season.

If you're look for a futures bet to place, I don't know if I've ever seen one with the amount of value that Gonsolin has at 10/1 to win the Cy Young. Sure, there is still a lot of season left, but Gonsolin has statistically been the best pitcher and if he keeps this up, his odds will only shorten.
