WATCH: Royals' Salvador Perez Sets All-Time Single Season Home Run Record for Catchers
By Ben Heisler
Welcome to the history books, Salvador Perez!
The Kansas City Royals' slugging catcher continued his magical season Monday afternoon in Cleveland as he launched his 46th home run of the 2021 season.
The blast to left-center field in the top of the fifth inning put him alone at the top of the mountain for most home runs hit in a single season for a primary catcher, passing Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer Johnny Bench.
Perez has been an integral part of the Kansas City Royals since his debut back in 2011. He's gone on to make seven All-Star teams, win back-to-back American League pennants in 2014-2015, and go on to become a World Series champion in 2015.
Despite the Home Run Record, the AL MVP Race is Already Over
Both Vlad Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays and Perez picked a rough time to have the best years of their career, as Angels phenom Shohei Ohtani is likely to pick up the American League MVP for 2021. Ohtani is a consensus -2500 to take home the hardware in 2021 as a bonafide superstar two-way player with 44 home runs, and a 9-2 record on the mound for the Angels with a 3.28 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 123.1 innings pitched.
Perez's previous season high for home runs in a season was 27 back in 2017 and 2018. After only playing in 37 games the last two seasons due to injury, the 31-year old catcher appears to be better than ever as his power surge continues. With two more home runs, Perez would reach 200 for his career.
