The Boston Red Sox have been without ace Chris Sale for the entire 2022 season so far, as he's dealing with a stress fracture in his right rib cage.

Sale, who was a major part of Boston's 2018 World Series win, has made just nine starts since 2019. He missed the entire 2020 season and the majority of the 2021 season after having Tommy John surgery on his elbow.

The Red Sox are +6000 to win the World Series this season at WynnBET, but they've played much better in May and could be a sneaky playoff team if Sale returns sooner rather than later.

Chris Sale Latest Injury Update

The bright side for Red Sox fans is that Sale has started throwing off a mound. He pitched a bullpen session back on May 24.

Sale is likely going to need a lengthy ramp up and some rehab starts to get MLB ready, but this is a positive sign after he suffered a setback earlier this season. The Red Sox would look a lot better with Sale in the rotation alongside Nathan Eovaldi and Nick Pivetta.

Chris Sale Injury History

After being fairly durable earlier in his career, Sale has missed a ton of time for the Red Sox over the past few seasons.

Sale was limited to 27 starts in 2018 after going on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation in late July, but he did return to help Boston win the World Series. He then missed the entire 2020 season and most of the 2021 season after having Tommy John surgery to repair a torn UCL in his throwing elbow.

Boston is hoping Sale's rib injury will be cleared up this season. Sale has a $27.5 million player option to remain with Boston at the end of the 2022 season.
