Yankees, Mets on Collision Course for Subway Series Rematch 22 Years Later
By Matt De Saro
It was more than 20 years ago that MLB fans, specifically those in New York, got to experience something truly special. A New York Yankees vs. New York Mets World Series. Dubbed the “Subway Series”, the Yankees would go on to sweep their cross-town rivals in four games and put an end to a debate that nobody was really having. Which New York baseball team was better?
It was kind of a joke, but the fact is that the Mets really surprised a lot of people by making it to their first World Series since the Miracle Mets in 1969. But no miracles this time around. The Yankees showed New York and the rest of the world who the biggest team in the Big Apple was.
Since then these two teams have been like ships passing in the night and we’ve not been particularly close to another Subway World Series since 2000.
Cut to the present day, however, and something magical is happening in New York. Both the Yankees and Mets are good. Like, really good. As of today, the Yankees have the best record in baseball and a seven-game lead over the Astros in the American League. They maintain an 8.5-game lead over the Blue Jays in the AL East. The Mets, meanwhile, lead the National League by two games over the Los Angeles Dodgers and are 5.5 games ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.
Both teams experiencing this much prosperity is very rare. In fact, since the Wild Card was introduced, the pair have been to the postseason at the same time just four times in 27 years. This is mostly due to the Mets, but the Bombers had their fair share of bad seasons since their epic run in the late 90s.
Getting back to 2022, I’m pumped for the prospect of another Subway World Series. I’m a bit biased as a Yankees fan, but I think the excitement for this outcome extends outside of the Tri-State area.
While we are closer to a Subway World Series than over the last 20 years, oddsmakers are not sold on one-half of this equation. Surprise, it’s the Mets. At WynnBET Sportsbook, the Mets (+350) are second in the NL Pennant odds to the Los Angeles Dodgers (+200). Conversely, the Yankees (+230) hold down the top spot in the AL Pennant odds over the Astros (+350) and Blue Jays (+500).
There is still a lot of baseballs yet to be played but this is a storyline to keep an eye on as we head into the summer. A lot can happen between now and the end of the season. But, both teams have already weathered storms this year and come out even better for it on the other end.
