All American

SEE ALL TV
All American has always been about heart. It's what keeps people tuning in, whether we're talking about the individual characters or their relationships with each other. For some of us that watch this football drama, it's a comfort show. One to look forward to because no matter what hardships or struggles the characters go through, they have a support system. They lean on one another. Given the state of the world, there's value in continuing to invest in a show that cares about the social movements going on in the real world and the real life inequalities that people deal with everyday. Sure, All American can be soapy and fun and scandalous, too, but the show always comes back to the heart. There's always an inspiring word or speech to bolster the characters and, by virtue of watching, the audience as well.

How this fandom is changing entertainment

There aren't a lot of shows focused on Black teens and young adults in general. You narrow that focus to current network television and that number decreases significantly. All American's success is due to two things — the strength of the show's storytelling in both writing and acting, and the dedication of its fans. All American, along with Black Lightning, is arguably the reason why there are more shows with Black leads coming to The CW in 2022. Among them is the spin-off series, All American: Homecoming, set at a historically Black college.

What was the icon or totem for this fandom this year?

Hands down it's Spencer and Olivia (ship name: Spelivia). They've been a fan favorite relationship since season 1. Despite being paired with different characters over the years, the two have always remained close and maintained a deep connection. In season 3 of the show, Spelivia finally got on the same page romantically, and in season 4, we're likely to see their bond deepen even more.
