For the first time in 13 years, Britney Spears spoke out against the conservatorship that has cast demeaning constraints and limitations on her personal and professional lives. The undisputed princess of pop bravely shared her story and ultimately celebrated the end of that conservatorship, thanking her legion of fans worldwide for their continued support in 2021 along the way. Even though the Grammy-winning pop icon hasn't released an album since 2016's incredible offering Glory, Britney is still a force to be reckoned with and always will be.

What emotion defined this fandom this year?
You may have watched the documentaries and read all of the headlines, but for a Britney Spears fan in 2021, the overwhelming emotion that defined the year was empowerment. Although we may have been angry, sad and other various emotions on behalf of our girl, the strength Britney displayed in regaining control of her life reaffirmed that perseverance we have always admired as Britney Spears fans.
How this fandom made the world a better place
Speaking up for the #FreeBritney movement has had wider impacts than just for Britney herself. In the wake of exposing and helping to end the pop icon’s 13-year conservatorship, California governor Gavin Newsom signed a new law that will reform conservatorships and, hopefully, end conservator abuse.
