Mississippi State Baseball

SEE ALL College
Prior to 2021, Mississippi State fans have never had a national championship in any team sport to celebrate. They came close on a couple of occasions in women's basketball but never quite won it all. The Bulldogs have long had a proud, tradition-rich baseball program that frequented the College World Series and competes in the most impressive college baseball stadium, but they'd never won it all until this year. This summer, Mississippi State finally broke through and won a national championship. MSU fans flocked to Omaha to support the Bulldogs as they won the College World Series and brought home the university's first national title.

How this fandom is changing sports

Few college fanbases invest anywhere near as much into college baseball as Mississippi State, and that happens because of how passionate their fans are about the sport. While many outside of the SEC may see college baseball as a niche sport, Mississippi State certainly celebrates the game. The Bulldogs and their fans not only own the record for the top on-campus college baseball crowd of all time, they’ve had nine of the top 10 crowds and 20 of the top 25 crowds all time.

What is this fandom’s best tradition?

Outside of regularly making the trip to Omaha to play in the College World Series, Mississippi State baseball may be best known for the Left Field Lounge. What originally began with a group of fans gathering along the outfield wall of Mississippi State baseball games during the 1960s and 1970s eventually grew into an experience that featured homemade rigs accommodating grills, smokers, and seating via miniature grandstands built on platforms set up on old pickup trucks. With the way Mississippi State built the new Dudy Noble Field at Polk-Dement Stadium, the Left Field Lounge has evolved into a permanent fixture that welcomes seasoned fans and newcomers alike to enjoy and partake in the festivities that surround college baseball.
