Only Murders In The Building

Only Murders in the Building was a brand new Hulu Original released this year, and calling it an original doesn't even do it justice. The mystery comedy is headlined by Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. At a time when the consumption of true crime media is at an all-time high, it is so fun to see a new, quirky take on those who consume true crime and secretly wish to be involved in the investigation from the start.

The best part of any good mystery is the end — the moment the pieces fall into place and the entire thing comes together. That moment for fans of Only Murders in the Building came in the season finale “Open and Shut.” For a whole season the audience followed the sometimes far-fetched investigation done by Mabel, Oliver, and Charles and were rewarded with a thrilling finale that brought all the pieces together to answer the ultimate question: What happened to Tim Kono?

The most unique part of Only Murders in the Building is that while being satire, it is also seriously compelling. The show's plot is three fanatics who are so obsessed with true crime content that they insert themselves into a murder investigation with no hesitation. The show often makes fun of or points out wild moments where true crime podcast listeners cross the line, or find too much enjoyment in a serious crime — all while simultaneously providing the show's audience with the same mystery, thrill, and intrigue that might make them act the same way.
