Most Unexpected

Albert Pujols

We can start with 700 home runs. A number so few people have achieved you can count them on one hand. We can talk about his career — a career so long that it can step into a bar and purchase a drink. But really along with all that, this year's about the comeback. His career looked over in Los Angeles — and just look at him now!

Best fan moment of the year

Sept. 23, 2022. Playing for the team he came up with, against the team he had represented only a season prior, Albert Pujols needed two home runs to become just the fourth player to reach the historical No 700. He hit two. Fans in both LA and St. Louis could go wild at that.

What emotion defined this fandom this year?

I think “joy“ is the best one. After several years of decline, Pujols came back for one last year, put up some amazing numbers as a 42-year-old playing for the team he spent most of his life with, and he joined a small, historic group in the final weeks of the season before retiring. This is pretty much movie-script stuff.
