Sylvia Fowles is one of the best centers in WNBA history—it’s basically her, Lisa Leslie and Lauren Jackson competing for that title. And the 2022 season was the last one for Fowles, who retired at end of the year. It also meant that there was one more chance for women’s basketball fans to celebrate Fowles’ storied career.

Why we needed this fandom this year
Sue Bird’s retirement got a lot of attention this year, but you can make a pretty strong argument that Fowles was the best WNBA to retire this year. Fowles has always been the kind of player who let her on-court performance do the talking, so it was good to see Fowles being celebrated like she was, even if it was a little weird when the Chicago Sky gave her a recliner as a retirement gift.
What we’ll remember about this fandom a decade from now
Hopefully, we’ll remember Sylvia Fowles. The attention—and, at times, the lack of attention—that was paid to Fowles this year won’t be what we think about in a decade. Hopefully, what we’ll think about is how dominant Fowles was when she was on the basketball court.
