You may not have heard about Vermont Green FC in 2022 but hopefully this is the last year that's the case. The USL League Two club played their inaugural season in Burlington, Vermont with the aim of not just playing great soccer but also using the sport as a powerful catalyst for a more environmentally sustainable and socially just world.

How this fandom is changing sports
Vermont Green FC launched with five goals to serve their core mission of environmental justice and make sure it was embedded in every aspect of the organization — net zero emissions, fighting systemic racism in soccer, donating 1% of their annual sales to environmental non-profits, providing only environmentally and socially responsible merchandise and using their platform to promote education and awareness. Many other professional sports organizations are working on these same kind of goals. Vermont Green FC has embedded them in the mission of the club from its inception.
What we’ll remember about this fandom a decade from now
Hopefully, a decade from now we'll see sports teams and organizations at all levels emulating the template Vermont Green FC is building, making social and environmental justice not just window-dressing but an indelible core value of the organization in every aspect of the business.
