One Piece was a smash hit when it landed on Netflix in August 2023. I knew of the show because I was familiar with the manga the series is based on, but I wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was. When I watched the first episode of the Netflix live-action series, I immediately fell in love. Honestly, it’s one of the best live-action adaptations I’ve seen in a while. I loved that this show managed to turn me, a non-fan, into a fan for life. I nominated One Piece because it was one of the best Netflix releases this year, and I want everyone to know it.

Why we needed this fandom this year
We needed One Piece this year because we needed a show to fill in for Stranger Things. Many new Netflix shows came out in 2023, but none could hold a candle to Stranger Things. Then, One Piece came along in August and changed the game. With Stranger Things coming to an end soon, it feels good to know we have One Piece to step up to the plate.
How this fandom is changing entertainment
One Piece is changing the entertainment industry by showing that live-action adaptations of popular anime/manga series can work. Since the live-action series stayed faithful to the source material, had involvement from the original author, had a big enough budget, and was perfectly cast, it was a huge success. Hopefully, future live-action adaptations take note.
