The term ‘generational talent’ seems to get thrown around a lot in sports today, but that’s exactly what Aaron Donald is. He won the Rookie of the Year, was a 10-time Pro-Bowler, nine-time All-Pro (making the first team eight times), and a three-time Defensive Player of the Year. Donald announced his retirement from football early this year to the dismay of football fans and the delight of offensive players around the league.

What we’ll remember about this fandom a decade from now
Arguably the most feared football player since Lawrence Taylor, Donald’s overall dominance is what will be remembered. He lined up at every spot on the defensive line and terrorized offenses. He led the league in sacks from the defensive tackle position, a stat normally dominated by edge rushers. Every team that faced the Rams during Donald’s career game-planned around him and Donald still had enormous success.
What emotion defined this fandom this year?
Joy. As hard as it is to watch an all-time great player walk away from the game, you can’t help but feel happy for Aaron Donald. He accomplished everything he set out to do, and was at peace with his decision to leave the game he loves. There’s no doubt that Donald would still be dominating the gridiron if he wanted to, but he’s made it clear in interviews that he is at peace with his retirement after a very fulfilling career.
