Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

SEE ALL Movies
A Mad Max: Fury Road sequel that doesn't involve Mad Max? It sounds like a terrible idea. Fury Road was such a singular artistic accomplishment — pure, adrenaline and gas-fueled visual storytelling. There was no way to replicate that sensation. So, wisely, George Miller and the creative team behind Furiosa decided to do something completely different. This is a proper epic, canvassing multiple years and chapters of Furiosa's rise from a plucky child of the forest to the living embodiment of vengeance and righteousness. We get the rollicking setpieces we've come to expect from Mad Max movies, but we also get heartfelt, quiet character moments, brought to life by magnificent performances from Anya Taylor-Joy and Tom Burke. This should win, like, a dozen Oscars.

Why we needed this fandom this year

You know, sometimes it feels like we're all careening toward the Wasteland. Furiosa has several blatant throughlines to modern culture and our current political atmosphere. Vengeance isn't necessarily a healthy desire, but sometimes it's nice to watch somebody mow down some bad guys on a guzzoline rig.

What was the icon or totem for this fandom this year?

Car chases. So many glorious, face-melting car chases.
