Evan Mobley is a strong reminder that we probably shouldn’t panic about a lack of offensive progression before a player’s 24th birthday. Especially when they’re already one of the five best defenders on this Earthly realm.

Mobley is a true 7-footer with a 7-foot-4 wingspan and incredibly light feet. The modern game rewards versatility, and Mobley supplies it in abundance. There isn’t a more malleable defensive anchor in the sport. Mobley is comfortable playing at the level in pick-and-rolls, switching onto the perimeter, or hanging back and stifling rim attempts in drop coverage. We have seen Cleveland try everything, from deploying Mobley at the top of zones to sticking him on the opponent’s best players, regardless of position. He is going to be a perennial DPOY candidate for years to come.
Now the offense is coming along, too. Mobley is shooting more 3s and leaning into his immense physical gifts. He’s bullying his way to points in the post, operating with a physicality we did not see early in his career. Mobley has the quickness and coordination to dominate as a face-up scorer. He can still settle into a more refined big man role when necessary, too, setting screens and catching lobs. Sneaky good is Mobley’s passing, and there’s still plenty of room to keep growing. Cleveland has a special two-way force on its hands.
