Another unfortunate victim of whatever curse has been applied to the Pelicans this season, Herb Jones’s best seasons are luckily very much still ahead of him. The Pelicans have resisted all trade inquiries for Jones after signing him to an extension last season and remain committed to him as a key component of their future.

Jones’s long ball dropped off a cliff this year, dipping to 31 percent in the 20 games he played, but it’s difficult to evaluate any of the Pelicans with how their season was wrecked from the very start with injuries. Jones is still an elite defender and a versatile wing in a league that covets them.

Will Jones get a chance to play meaningful ball next season in New Orleans or elsewhere? For as much ink has been spilled on the wasted potential of Zion Williamson, Jones and his wing partner Trey Murphy III have had incredible starts to their careers submarined by the Pelicans’ misfortune as much as anyone.
