Mixed martial arts just took another major step towards becoming a fixture in the mainstream sports world, while their light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones is closer than ever to becoming a worldwide star. Jones has inked a global sponsorship deal with the marketing geniuses of Nike.
It is a multi-year deal that will begin on September 1st when “Bones” Jones puts his 205-pound championship strap on the line against MMA legend Dan Henderson. MMAFighting.com was the first to report the news.
Jones later confirmed the news on his official Twitter account:
Blessed to be signed by the biggest sports apparel company in the world
#NIKE Dreams do come true
— Jon Bones Jones (@JonnyBones) August 8, 2012
Jones will reportedly be outfitted from head to toe in gear featuring the world famous “swoosh” and will be featured in worldwide marketing campaigns. Along with the advertisements, Jones is expected to have his own signature Nike line. He will be come the first mixed martial arts star to receive a global contract from Nike. Middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Japanese sensation “Sexyama” Yoshihiro Akiyama have Nike deals in their home countries of Brazil and Japan, respectively.
Jones initially sought a Nike sponsorship in May when he traveled to the corporation’s campus in Oregon along with his manager Malki Kawa. The two sides then began contract talks.
The 25-year-old is poised to take mixed martial arts to the next level with his ground breaking deal. He has been called a potential “Michael Jordan of MMA” in the past and this endorsement could take Jones to that level of fame if he continues to showcase his dominance in the octagon.
