The fight that UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones turned down on short notice will finally take place. Jones is set to coach on the third season of The Ultimate Fighter on FX against the trash-talking genius Chael Sonnen. UFC president Dana White confirmed the news today.
“This should be a good one,” White said. “Jon has accepted the fight. He knows the fans want to see that fight.”
Jones and Sonnen will meet following the season on April 27th at a yet to be announced pay-per view event. The Ultimate Fighter: Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen will begin filming on October 29th in Las Vegas. The season will feature middleweight fighters who will be competing to win the next six-figure UFC contract.
We were close to seeing Jones put his title on the line against Sonnen earlier in the year but Jones refused the proposed UFC 151 matchup because he felt he would not have sufficient time to prepare for a challenger such as Sonnen. Instead of only having to deal with Sonnen for a few months, Jones will now be publicly ridiculed by Sonnen for months before the two finally meet in the cage.
Last week, Sonnen hinted that the two sides were in negotiations with a tweet that read, “You don’t give. I TAKE. Remembah that, Bonesie-boy.”
Sonnen will be actively trying to get in the head of Jones and will have more than enough to do just that. This season of The Ultimate Fighter looks to be one of the most interesting seasons in recent memory. When you have one of the organization’s greatest fighters and a man with Sonnen’s charisma, the show is destined to be exciting.
