The co-main event of tonight’s Championship Fighting Alliance event on AXS TV had a lot of intrigue because of the presence of controversial transgender fighter Fallon Fox. Fox was taking on opponent Allanna Jones, and people were interested to see if Fox would finally be given a challenge. With all of the media attention surrounding Fox, the two women were in the biggest fight of their career.
If you don’t know the story, throughout the past few months, Fox has become a lightning rod of controversy. Everyone around the mixed martial arts world has been sounding off on whether or not it is fair for Fox to be fighting against women because of her past as a man. It’s a troubling and confusing issue that no one is quiet sure how to feel about, but the common belief is that she should not be able to fight women because of the bone structure Fox has is that of a man.
The first shot of the night was fired when Jones walked out to the song “Dude *Looks Like a Lady)” showing a clear lack of respect for her opponent. When Fox was introduced, the fighter made the way to the cage to a shower of boos.
Once the opening bell rang, both fighters immediately came toe-to-toe in the middle of the cage. Fox was throwing some powerful low kicks to Jones’ lead leg to start the action. Fox continuously stalked her opponent, while she patiently looked for openings in Jones’ defense. After an entertaining scramble on the ground, Jones was able to get back to her feet and the crowd immediately erupted with cheering to support the massive underdog.
At the end of round one, Fox appeared to be completely exhausted.
Despite being exhausted, Fox pressed forward and remained in Jones’ face throughout the early goings in the second-round. Unfortunately for Jones, she was completely overwhelmed by Fox’s strength and the controversial fighter was always able to come out on top in the clinch game and on the ground, but Jones was a very tough and game opponent that was able to withstand the punishment and take Fox to deep waters for the first time in her career.
In the third round, Fox was able to get the fight to the ground once again and ultimately ended the fight. Fox trapped Jones’ head with one arm and drover her knee to the carotid artery on the opposite side of Jones’ neck on her way towards ending the fight with a unique choke.
Fox’s lack of technique was evident throughout the fight, but her power is undeniable.
This is a big reason why there is so much controversy surrounding Fox. With a much bigger frame and natural strength, she can overcome the lack of technique to overpower the weaker and much smaller opponents.
With the win, Fox advances to the finals of the CFA women’s 145-pound tournament.
