UFC middleweight champion and pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva will put his title on the line at UFC 162 on July 6 in Las Vegas when he faces off against Chris Weidman in a highly anticipated bout. On paper, Weidman is the toughest test for Silva in recent memory and there are multiple people who believe Silva is in serious danger of losing his belt. One of those people is welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who could face Silva in a superfight later this year if the champ retainshis title.
UFC president Dana White talked with GSP about Silva’s upcoming title defense and he shared those thoughts following this weekend’s UFC 160.
“We had a good conversation,” White said. “He 100 percent, absolutely, positively knows that Weidman is going to beat Anderson Silva. No doubt in his mind that the fight with [Silva] won’t happen because Weidman is going to win. There’s no ‘what if’ for him. He absolutely, positively knows [Weidman] is going to win that fight.”
If Silva loses, that ends any chance we have of seeing a Silva superfight against Jon Jones or GSP.
Many people would love to see Weidman give Silva the toughest test of his career and potentially pull off the stunning upset, but a majority of mixed martial arts fans are hoping for a superfight by the end of the year, which would require a Silva win.
