UFC on FUEL TV 10 was turning in to the night of first-round submissions after the first three fights of the main card ended in round one with the Brazilian’s hand raised. With the fight card nearing an end, the action turned to the light-heavyweight division between aggressive striker Thiago Silva who was making his octagon return and former Strikeforce champion Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante.
Silva had not earned a win that didn’t end up being overturned by the commission since 2009, while Cavalcante was looking to taste victory for the first time since 2011. Both men were hungry to get back in the win column, so we anticipated fireworks. In a night full of submissions, these guys were content settling their differences on the feet and settling their differences on the feet.
As you would expect, both men marched to the center of the octagon and were aggressive from the starting bell. The bad blood between Silva and Rafael Feijao was obvious as they exchanged punches and kicks with neither man backing down. Feijao was landing more often than Silva in the early goings of the bout with some big right hands and crisp jabs. Silva was able to answer with counter shots and back up his opponent, but there was no serious damage done.
Silva was doing well covering himself up, but a beautiful spinning back elbow from Feijao stunned Silva and triggered an exciting exchange. Silva’s chin held up and he continued to press forward, while Feijao started to slow down.
With time running out in the first-round, Silva landed some heavy blows that stunned the exhausted Feijao before a huge upper cut that dropped the former Strikeforce champ and finish him with a shot on the ground before referee Dan Miragliotta came in to save the day.
The last two times that Silva won inside of the octagon, the results were overturned by failed drug tests. Let’s hope this impressive performance holds up.
Official time of the stoppage came at 4:29 of round one.
