Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman: Dan Henderson Would Bet on the Champ

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is set to defend his title on the first weekend of July when he takes on top contender Chris Weidman in the main event of UFC 162. While Silva is undoubtedly the best fighter of all-time, there are plenty of people who are backing Weidman and believe that he could be the one man to take down the champion.

Because of Weidman’s power, speed and aggressive wrestling style, he presents a tough match up on paper. Think of him as a younger, better version of Chael Sonnen, but Weidman has not been battle tested.

With that lack of big fight experience, one mixed martial arts veteran is coming to back the current champ. Mixed martial arts legend Dan Henderson said that if he was going to bet on the fight, Silva would be his pick.

“I really haven’t seen much of Chris Weidman, I know he’s very well rounded and very tough and just a tough dude on his feet and a wrestler as well, so I think he’s capable of putting Anderson on his back and also striking with him,” Hendo said, via MMA Mania. “But he hasn’t been tested very well with his chin and Anderson definitely will test it, he’s very accurate with his striking. I would probably have to bet on Anderson if I was going to bet.”

Weidman is still young and has a lot of room to grow in the sport, so a loss wouldn’t be the end of the world for him, but a win would take his career to new heights.

It is hard to imagine Weidman pulling off the win after a one-year layoff from surgery and the lack of big fight experience, but even if he is able to come in and win a round it will be huge for him moving forward in his career.
