Saturday night’s UFC on FOX 8 event kicked off the main card with a women’s bantamweight fight between former title challenger Liz Carmouche and Jessica Andrade. It was the first female fight to ever take place on FOX, so you knew the women would be coming out with an extra chip on their shoulder and something to prove.
The two women wasted no time marching to the center of the octagon and exchanging some heavy strikes, before Carmouche was able to get the clinch and push the Brazilian up against the cage.
As soon as the fight got to the mat, Carmouche was able to move to side control. However, Andrade stayed composed and was able to get back to her feet.
When the fight returned to the stand up game, the two women exchanged position and continuously reversed each other against the cage. Andrade eventually started threatening with a guillotine, but Carmouche was able to pull her legs out from under her and complete the takedown as she moved to half guard.
Carmouche went for an interesting position, but Andrade picked her off the ground and landed a vicious slam. Andrade eventually was close to locking in an arm in guillotine. Carmouche began to sense danger and was fighting to get out of the position, but Andrade was very patient as she continued to work the choke until the first round came to an end.
The former title challenger began Round 2 with a big takedown before advancing her position to full mount.
Once Carmouche was in the dominant position, she was able to land some devastating ground and pound and ultimately made her way to Andrade’s back.
Andrade tried to fight her way out of the position, but Carmouche was able to sink her arm under Andrade’s chin. However, the Brazilian showed her heart and fought out of the deep submission attempt before Carmouche landed more vicious ground and pound that included brutal elbows.
Referee Herb Dean eventually was forced to call a halt to the action after Andrade was unable to defend herself.
It was the first win of Carmouche’s career after the vicious ground and pound and it brought Carmouche one step closer to earning a rematch with UFC champion Ronda Rousey.
