Many people picked the welterweight bout between Robbie Lawler and Bobby Voelker on the main card of UFC on FOX 8 as the favorite to earn Fight of the Night honors, but they would need an incredible bout to steal the bonus from a few of the fights that took place on the night’s undercard, despite Voelker taking the fight on such short notice.
Lawler and Voelker took a few seconds to feel each other out before Lawler opened up the action with a three-punch combo that Voelker was able to avoid. As the two fighters continued to circle around the octagon, Lawler was throwing punches in high volume until eventually taking the fight to the mat and working from the half-guard. Voelker quickly got back to his feet, but Lawler remained in the dominant position.
Voelker began to gush blood from a cut on the bridge of his nose and you could see a fire light up in Lawler’s eyes. Lawler began to stock Strikeforce around the cage before exciting the crowd with a head kick and flying knee. Neither shot did much damage, but they were wearing on Voelker as the round came to an end.
Once the second round began it did not take long for Lawler to get the win.
Lawler landed a big head kick that sent Voelker crumbling to the mat before landing the finishing shots on the ground. It was a perfectly executed head kick for Lawler that led to his second win in a row. Lawler is showing that he can be a real force at 170-pounds with his power.
Official stoppage came at just 24 seconds of the second round.
