After two snoozers to kick off the UFC 165 pay-per view card, heavyweights Brendan Schaub and Matt Mitrione entered the octagon in what fans were hoping would be a slugfest to breathe some life back in to the Air Canada Centre and wake everyone up.
The bad blood boiled over to start the fight as Mitrione refused to touch gloves and the two men were not afraid to let the punches fly early.
Both fighters were throwing some heavy leather and not thinking about keeping their hands up, so we seemed to be just one solid punch away from the fight being over. Schaub was cut on the hairline midway through the round, but Schaub was able to land a heavy right that opened up a nasty cut on Mitrione’s left eye.
Schaub charged forward with a wild flurry of punches before he was able to land a big takedown and quickly looked for a choke. During the scramble, Schaub was able to lock in the D’arce choke and put Mitrione to sleep.
Official time of the stoppage was 4:06 of the first round.
