Former Strikeforce champion and UFC welterweight title challenger Nick Diaz is currently enjoying the cozy life of retirement, but his teammate Gilbert Melendez has confirmed what we all had believed — Diaz will return to the octagon with the right opportunity.
As it currently stands, Diaz has no interest in fighting lower level competition, but he still has the itch to fight and would welcome a bout against a top contender.
“I think with the right opportunity, for the right thing, he’ll come out,” said Melendez, via MMA Fighting. “Whether it’s boxing, whether it’s kickboxing, whether it’s whatever, some sort of challenge would be great.”
“I don’t think he has the desire to be a stepping stone or he doesn’t want to play that role. Sometimes you have to come back up the ladder in your career and I don’t think he wants that. I think he wants to fight top-level competition. He doesn’t need to fight just to take it.”
“Nick is forever ready. He’s always in shape, he’s always sparring, he’s always grappling. He does triathlons, he’s in better shape than most guys who are relevant now in the game.”
One interesting bout would be Diaz vs. Michael Bisping once he is healthy enough to return.
This is an idea that UFC president Dana White has thrown around in the past, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the former welterweight return to the octagon a weight class higher to take on the British superstar.
However, until a big fight is offered, Diaz will remain retired.
