Daniel Cormier should fight Phil Davis or Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

With teammate Cain Velasquez staying on top of the UFC Heavyweight division, Daniel Cormier will now drop to the 205 pound weight class.

There has been talk of Cormier jumping right in and getting a title shot against light heavyweight champion Jon Jones; however there have also been whispers of the Strikeforce Grand Prix winner stepping into the octagon against former No. 1 contender Alexander Gustafsson.

Cormier said he would be opening to fighting “The Mauler” but he would prefer the match take place in the United States to ensure he has a proper weight cut to 205 pounds. UFC President Dana White said that Gustafsson’s next dance in the octagon would be in Europe.

With Gustafsson out of the picture, there are not a lot of options for a high profile match in his debut at light heavyweight; however there are two possible match-ups for the Strikeforce veteran.

“Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis and Antonio Rogerio “Minotouro” Nogueira are two of the top ranked fighters at light heavyweight. Davis is coming off of a win over former champion Lyoto Machida while “Lil’ Nog” was expected to face Mauricio Rua until he had to pull out of the fight from a back injury.

Davis and Nogueira would be good opponents for Cormier, who looked at both Mr. Wonderful or Lil’ Nog as big fights.

Davis and Cormier would be a good match on the ground as both fighters have great wrestling skills; however I would give “DC” the edge in the stand up.

As for Nogueira, it would be the classic wrestler vs, Brazilian jiu-jitsu match up, though Cormier has some jiu-jitsu skills of his own. When it comes to striking, both fighters are about even.

A win over either Davis or Nogueira could put Cormier in line for a title match.
