European MMA promotion Cage Warriors will be heading to Baghdad for the first time in the promotion’s 11-year history.

Cage Warriors made the announcement, Nov. 11, that they would have the event in the Iraqi capital. Iraq will be the 11th country to host a Cage Warriors fight card. Earlier this year, Cage Warriors traveled to United Arab Emirates and Chechnya.

Cage Warriors 61 was originally scheduled to take place in Dagestan, Russia, Nov. 16; however issues “paved the way for a change of date and venue to Baghdad,” according to the statement on the promotion’s website.

Cage Warriors 61 will actually take place after Cage Warriors 62, which takes place Dec. 7. Following Cage Warriors 61, the promotion will have Cage Warriors 63 on New Year’s Eve.

I think this a great move for the promotion as it allows them to travel outside of Europe and get themselves a wider live audience in other countries. It will be interesting to see if they feature on the fight card like the UFC does when they have shows in different countries. If they do and the local fighters put on a good performance, they could be signed to contracts and return to Cage Warriors in the future.

No fights have been announced for the Cage Warriors 61 though the promotion promises that the event will have a “strong fight card.” Personally I would not mind seeing a four-man one-night tournament to commemorate the organization’s first event in the city. If the event in Baghdad proves to be successful, fans could see another Cage Warriors event come to the city in 2014.
