Even lesser known promotions like the World Series of Fighting are not immune to injuries that reshape their fight cards.
According to reports, Mike Kyle has dropped out of the WSOF 7 main event against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, scheduled for Dec. 7, due to a broken pinkie toe. Taking the main event spot will be the featherweight championship match against undefeated prospect Lance “The Party” Palmer and former Tachi Palace Fights Featherweight champion Georgi Karakhanyan.
Although I hope Kyle makes a speedy and healthy recovery, I think the WSOF made a good decision by putting the featherweight match in the top spot, where it belonged. I have harped on this in the past – especially when it came to Bellator’s pay per view situation – but a championship match should always be the headliner of any fight card. Promotions need to put emphasis on their champions, even if their event features former UFC guys and the title holder is an up-and-coming star.
Because the promotion has not been able to find Johnson a suitable opponent on short notice, he will be removed from the card. Hopefully he and Kyle at a future event. They could even make it more meaningful by making it for the WOSF Heavyweight championship.
