Gilbert Melendez has been in the headlines for more than a few weeks now for his bold move in testing the market in free agency. After Dana White told Melendez to ‘hit the block’ once their contract discussion came to halt, Melendez did just that by agreeing to an offer from Bellator. The UFC had the right to match that offer, and the ball was in their court.
Of course, the UFC could not let one of the top 3 Lightweights in the world go to their rival promotion, so the UFC matched Bellator’s offer and re-signed Melendez. Not only was Melendez given a new UFC contract, he was also granted coaching duties for season 20 of the Ultimate Fighter featuring Women’s Strawweights. Coaching against Melendez will be the UFC Lightweight champion, Anthony Pettis. After the show concludes, Melendez and Pettis will fight for the UFC Lightweight championship.
Melendez went on Twitter today to thank his fans, the UFC, and his management team for helping him achieve these recent goals:

Melendez is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Diego Sanchez back at UFC 166 in one of the best fights of 2013. That bout garnered Melendez a ton of new fans who will be eager to watch him coach on TUF 20.
