UFC 171 prelims results: Dennis Bermudez and Alex Garcia pick up victories in exciting bouts

UFC 171 is underway, and the card is off to a fast start. If you missed the Fight Pass prelims, check out the coverage here and here.

Later tonight on pay per view, the UFC will begin a new era at Welterweight as Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler battle for the vacant Welterweight title. This will be the first time in nearly eight years that the undisputed Welterweight title will be on the line without Georges St-Pierre fighting for the belt.

Before the main card starts, the UFC has put together a stellar undercard on Fox Sports 2. Below you can catch the coverage of the first two FS2 prelims.

Sean Spencer vs Alex Garcia

Garcia landed a few powerful punches to start the round. Garcia got a takedown on the fence, but Spencer got back to his feet. After some striking exchanges, Garcia landed a beautiful high kick and followed it up with an uppercut. Garcia got a takedown, but Spencer got right back to his feet again. The second round began with exchanges from both men, but Garcia got another takedown. Spencer got to his feet and hurt Garcia with a right hand and a head kick. While trying to finish Garcia, Spencer ate a hook that hurt him and Garcia tried to finish him. Wild exchanges from both men trying to finish each other. Spencer eats another clean right hook. Garcia throwing only haymakers. Garcia got a takedown with just over a minute to go. Spencer got back to his feet and hurt Garcia again. Amazing second round. Spencer rushes in to start round 3. Spencer seems to have hurt his leg on a checked kick. Garcia got a big takedown with three minutes to go. Spencer got back to his feet and landed a nice head kick and right hand. Garcia got Spencer down and into full mount, but Spencer got back to his feet again. An exchange on the feet ends the fight.

Dennis Bermudez vs Jimy Hettes

Bermudez came out attacking with inside leg kicks. They clinched on the fence, Bermudez caught a knee and slammed Hettes. Hettes got right back to his feet, but Bermudez got him down again. Hettes once again to his feet, lands some shots, but is slammed down again. Hettes back to his feet, but is slammed again. A lot of dirty boxing inside from Bermudez. Takedown into side control for Bermudez. Hettes establishes full guard, but eats some ground and pound. Bermudez pressured Hettes on the fence for the first minute and a half of the second round. Bermudez hurt Hettes on the fence, and followed up with some heavy ground and pound. Bermudez stacks Hettes and lands a few hard shots. Hettes gets to his feet, and gets Bermudez’s back in a scramble. Third round starts and Bermudez gets Hettes right back on the fence. Bermudez hurts Hettes again with a short right hook, and follows up with some ground and pound. After a minute, Bermudez lets Hettes get to his feet and stuffs a weak takedown. Hettes is just dropping on everything Bermudez is throwing, and the ref stops the fight after a knee to the face from Bermudez.
