Carl has won seven fights in a row by way of submission; three of which came inside the WSOF. In his last bout, Carl defeated Josh Burkman at WSOF 6 to capture the Welterweight title. Instead of waiting to fight Jon Fitch in June, Carl elected to defend his title against the dangerous jiu-jitsu ace, Rousimar Palhares, tonight.
Palhares was cut from the UFC after defeating Mike Pierce by heel hook back in October. That night, Palhares held on to the heel hook after Pierce had tapped and the referee had stepped in. Ultimately, Palhares was blacklisted in the MMA community before getting his shot in WSOF. Palhares has promised to change his ways and looks to move on from his past by capturing the WSOF Welterweight title tonight.
Round 1: Quick takedown by Palhares countering a right hand from Carl. Carl has Palhares’ arm trapped and is working a triangle. Palhares breaks out and drops down for a heel hook. Carl is desperately trying to break free, spinning around. Palhares is relentless and latches on to an inverted heel hook and Carl taps. Palhares seemingly holds it a bit too long again. Quick submission victory and the title for Palhares in his WSOF debut.
Official Decision: Rousimar Palhares defeats Steve Carl by Submission (Inverted Heel Hook) Round 1 (1:09)
