UFC 172 kicked off the pay-per-view portion of the card with a featherweight bout between two of the up-and-comers in the division, Max Holloway and Andre Fili.
Round 1: Both fighters began the fight being patient from the outside. Holloway landed the first significant strike of the night with a solid right uppercut, but Fili remained in the pocket. Fili was beginning to open up and finding his range against Holloway, with some shots to the body and upstairs. Fili mixed in a head kick after Holloway’s spinning back kick to the body. Fili controlled Holloway up against the cage for the later portion of the round, before Holloway reversed position right at the end of the frame.
FanSided scorecard: 10-9, Fili
Round 2: Holloway was aggressive out of the gate in the second round and landing some big knees in the clinch, as he pressed Fili up against the cage. Holloway caught a kick attempt from Fili and dumped him, but Fili was able to get right back to his feet. Holloway was controlling the tempo and range in the second, and Fili didn’t seem to have an answer. With just two minutes remaining, Fili hit a takedown and began working from the full guard, before isolating the head and arm and working for a choke. The referee immediately stood the two fighters back up, where Holloway tried for another spinning kick to the body only to get pushed up against the cage from Fili. Fili shot for another takedown at the end of the round, but settled for pushing his opponent up against the cage.
FanSided scorecard: 10-9, Holloway (19-19)
Round 3: Fili shot for a takedown early in the third, but Holloway was able to shake it off and circle back to the center of the octagon. Fili eventually landed the takedown on his next attempt, and began to work from inside of the half guard. Holloway was able to hurt Fili on the feet, before locking in a guillotine to bring an end to the fight.
Official Result: Max Holloway def. Andre Fili via submission (guillotine), 3:39, Round 3
