Fabio Maldonado steps in to face Stipe Miocic at TUF Brazil 3 Finale

The UFC was put in a pickle this week when former heavyweight champion, Junior Dos Santos broke his hand in training and was forced to withdraw from his scheduled main event bout against Stipe Miocic at the TUF Brazil 3 Finale on May 31.

Since the event is in Brazil, the UFC needed a Brazilian to headline the card in order to please the fans. What made the injury to Dos Santos even worse is that the originally planned main event between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva was pushed off to UFC 175.

With no Brazilian heavyweights ready to fight Miocic, UFC light heavyweight Fabio Maldonado has decided to step up in weight on short notice. Obviously this fight is not what the UFC and it’s fans hoped for, but kudos must be given to Maldonado for his willingness to save the card and please his hometown fans.

After losing three fights in a row, Maldonado has now won three fights in a row by decision. Each fight Maldonado shows off his impressive boxing credentials and his heart of a lion. Regardless of the weight difference, it will be hard for Miocic to take out Maldonado.
