A big fight for World Series of Fighting got bigger this week, as now a lightweight title shot is on the line.
UFC veteran Melvin Guillard and Gesias Cavalcante will do battle in WSOF’s NBC debut Saturday, which will also feature a lightweight title fight between champion Justin Gaethje and Nick Newell.
“We were teammates, and we got along great,” Guillard said to MMA Junkie. “But just like he looks at this as a big fight for him, it’s a big fight for me, as well. We’re good friends, but we’re going to put the friendship aside in the ring. We’re going to fight our asses off to get to that next level, they called us today and said, ‘The winner gets a title shot.’ Now we have a lot more on the line than we thought.”
WSOF 11 will take place Saturday at the Ocean Center in Daytona Florida, and will be WSOF’s debut on the NBC network. The event airs at 4 pm eastern, and Guillard/Cavalcante will be featured on the event’s main card.
WSOF hasn’t hesitated signing recently released UFC fighters like Guillard, as another set of recent releases, Jon Fitch and Dennis Hallman will compete against each other on the card as well.
Today, Guillard missed weight by several pounds. No word on if this will affect him getting a possible title shot.
