Finally, former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has a date scheduled for his return to the Octagon.
After nearly three years out of action thanks to multiple lower body injuries that resulted in countless surgeries, Cruz is set to return to the UFC and begin his climb back up the bantamweight rankings on September 27 against Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 178.
The fight was first announced by ESPN.com, before UFC officials confirmed the booking.
“I’m excited to finally be back,” Cruz told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto. “It’s been a long time coming, but I feel great and I’m already training hard. Mizugaki is tough and he’s been on a roll, but I’m ready to get back in there and prove that I’m the best bantamweight in the world.”
With a win, Cruz could very well be immediately back in the title picture.
For a division that is lacking any big name challengers for new champion TJ Dillashaw other than his teammate Urijah Faber, having Cruz back in Sept. could not come at a better time.
We will now just have to see if Cruz will be able to get by Mizugaki as he attempts to remain undefeated inside of the UFC.
