Glover Teixeira and Phil Davis verbally agree to fight at UFC 179

Two top tier light heavyweights coming off tough losses at UFC 172 have verbally agreed to fight at UFC 179 in October. Glover Teixeira, who was handed his first loss in nearly eight years at the hands of UFC champion Jon Jones, has agreed to take on Phil Davis in Rio de Janeiro.

According to Combate, the contract has yet to be signed by either man, but the bout is more than likely to occur at UFC 179. If in fact these two men go toe-to-toe, the winner will be right back in the mix at the top of the UFC’s light heavyweight division.

Phil Davis’ three fight winning streak was cut short by the insurgent Anthony Johnson at UFC 172, who returned to the UFC that night in the light heavyweight division to pull off the massive upset.

Johnson returned to the cage last night at UFC on FOX 12, throttling MMA legend Rogerio Nogueira en route to a TKO in just 44 seconds. By defeating two of the top ranked UFC light heavyweight, Johnson has positioned himself right at the top of the pecking order behind Alexander Gustafsson and Daniel Cormier.

The UFC may even scratch the Davis vs Glover matchup in favor of a Johnson vs Glover matchup. If Johnson is able to beat the likes of Glover Teixeira, it would be hard to deny him a UFC title shot.

Although the division may be the UFC’s thinnest, there is quite a lot of exciting matchups on the horizon in the light heavyweight division.
