Here is what happened when welterweight contenders Johny Hendricks and Stephen Thompson fought at UFC Fight Night 82.
Welterweight contenders Johny Hendricks and Stephen Thompson squared off in the main event of UFC Fight Night 82 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was originally the co-main event of UFC 196, but after heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum and challenger Cain Velasquez both pulled out within 24 hours it was moved to Fox Sports 1.
There are interesting storylines in this fight. Hendricks is a former welterweight champion looking to get the belt back and has struggled with his weight recently. Hendricks has a new weight management coach in Lou Giordano and it seemed to serve him well heading into UFC Fight Night 82. Across the cage, Thompson is a rising contender trying to earn a title shot of his own.
Here is a play-by-play of the fight:
ROUND 1: Thompson threw a big kick but doesn’t land it, and Hendricks follows up by closing the range and getting him in the clinch against the cage and proceeded to try and work him to the ground with knees to his legs. Thompson was able to escape and push Hendricks off of him. Thompson landed a big side kick to Hendricks’ gut and then landed another one to his chin. Thompson landed a combination of punches to push Hendricks back. Thompson seemed to be landing big shots and putting Hendricks on the ropes and in danger early. Hendricks through a body kick but ate a straight left from Thompson. Thompson threw a right that caught Hendricks off and then proceeded to work Hendricks against the cage and finished him with a flurry of strikes.
