Bellator Japan: Michael Chandler KO’s Sidney Outlaw in the first round

Michael Chandler made quick work of late-replacement Sidney Outlaw via KO in the first round of Bellator Japan.

Michael Chandler defeated Sidney Outlaw by KO, Round 1 – 2:59 at Bellator Japan on Dec. 28, 2019, live from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

“Fighting in front of the Tokyo crowd, was a dream come true,” Chandler said during his post-fight interview. “I’m still hungry for belts, I’m still hungry for world titles. Three isn’t enough.”

Chandler rebounds nicely in his first fight back after losing to Patricio Freire in May and looks to challenge again for the lightweight championship.

Here’s how the whole fight played out.

Round 1

The bell rings and the two meet in the center. Chandler and Outlaw throw individual punches before Chandler backs him into the cage. An exchange of punches with Chander working the body.  Outlaw taps CHandler with a left but backs up as Chandler returns a straight and low shot. A kick from Chandler was caught by Outlaw but Chandler pulls back. Chandler lands a stiff right to the body. Left by Chandler but a counter right from Outlaw. Chandler tests for range as he brings another right to Outlaw’s body. Chandler lands a short right to the head of Outlaw, but Outlaw remains up and lands an uppercut on Chandler. Chandler lands with a combo but Outlaw backs him up with a shot of his own. Chandler drops Outlaw with a shot right behind the ear of Outlaw, and Chandler adds one more to a down Outlaw. The ref waves the fight and Chandler wins by KO.

The fight was originally supposed to involve Chandler taking on Benson Henderson. Henderson was forced to pull out due to an injury, resulting in Outlaw subbing in as a replacement. This was Outlaw’s first fight in the promotion, with Chandler making his return to the cage in his first fight since losing the Bellator lightweight championship.
