News broke of a potential Reyes vs. Blachowicz bout on Sept. 26.
The UFC light heavyweight title picture has become a little more confusing with news of a developing matchup breaking on Monday. According to Brett Okamoto of ESPN, a fight between Dominick Reyes and Jan Blachowicz is in the works for an upcoming card on Sept. 26 at UFC 253.
The details of the match in regards to a potential title were not revealed.
Jon Jones announced he’d be heading to heavyweight but we aren’t sure yet if that means he’ll drop his light heavyweight title or if the UFC will hold an interim fight in his absence.
Reyes and Blachowicz are currently ranked No. 1 and No. 3 respectively. Reyes boasts a 12-1 record, with his only defeat coming in a super-close fight to Jones in February at UFC 247. Many felt he’d won that bout and a rematch was being discussed. Before that, he had defeated several top names including Chris Weidman, Jared Cannonier and Volkan Oezdemir.
Blachowicz is riding a three-fight win streak with an overall record of 26-8. During his current run, he has defeated Corey Anderson, Ronaldo Souza, and Luke Rockhold.
What is next for Jon Jones?
Other than Blachowicz, Jones has defeated the other four men ranked in the top-five of the division. Plus, he made it clear that he has interest in fighting Stipe Miocic after his victory over Daniel Cormier at UFC 252. While it is unknown if UFC president Dana White will work to make that fight for Jones, a potential bout between he and Miocic would be a massive moment for the UFC.
UFC 253 is currently headlined with a middleweight championship bout between Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa. Donald Cerrone, Johnny Walker, Claudia Gadelha, Mackenzie Dern, and others are also scheduled to compete.
